I was not in class for the first half of the movie but I think this is when he first realizes that Jean is different. Not just by the way he looks but in both his knowledge and how he handles situations.

I think this scene is an important one in the progression of the relationship between Julien and Jean. Julien keeps discovering Jean's talents and intelligence, and they become challenges to his own accomplishments and status at the school. This gives him more reason to resent Jean and his presence at the school.

Before Jean entered the school Julien was the smartest and most popular. Julien is beginning to be jealous of Jean because he is taking Julien's place in the school and this clip demonstrates that perfectly.

I too missed out on the first part of the film. This scene shows the talent that Jean has and the difficulty Julien has with playing the piano. Sometimes such a beautiful instrument as this takes time for other to grasp while others, it just comes naturally.

Julien tends to think Jean is playing a game to win the teacher's heart which annoys Julien. He cannot understand that some people are just different.

I think this scene represents both a strain to Julien and Jean's relationship but also represents a bond between them. Jean's intelligence threatens that of Julien. But this scene seems to bring them closer because Julien realizes how smart Jean really is.

This scene shows some of the jealousy that Julien feels toward Jean. It also shows the sense of competition Julien feels toward Jean because he feels that Jean is more talented than him, and previously he had been the best at everything.

I think that this clip represents the strain in their relationship. Julien starts to see how Jean is different from him and the other boys and first starts to suspect that something is not right with Jean.

This scence shows the jealous in their relationship. Jean is different and more intelligent. Unitl he came to the school, Julien was the smartest. Julien is jealous of Jean and this scene shows just the begining of those feelings.

I think this scene represents an epiphany of sorts for Julien. This is when he realizes that Jean is more different than he had realized. This scene reveals the jealousy that Julien feels toward Jean because he is superior to him in his intelligence and talents.

In this scene, Julien seems to realize that there is something different about Jean. Julien also realizes that for the first time, he is not the best at something, Jean is. Julien feels threatened by him, which puts a strain on them both and causes some of Julien's resentment toward Jean.

This scene is important because it shows the first signs of resentment towards jean. It shows that jean is talented in many areas and is a threat to julien. The next time that julein's intellect and ability is challenged is in class after they recieve grades back on a paper they had written. Jean seemed to get more complements while julien was questioned on his choices..such as "maybe you should try the violin" and "i dont think you could handle being a priest." These comments depress julien and he starts to feel inadequate. Jean recieving complents and encouragment just fuels juliens disgust for jean. This scence shows when julien starts to take more notice of jeans ability and notices that he is differnt from his other class mates. He then begins to observe jean more so.

I think that the director was pointing out that Jean is different in some ways and similar in others. I also think that this scene foreshadows the scene of them both playing the piano during a air raid on the city. It also fuels the relationship of these two boys who become friends because they both are the same but different.

This scene shows Julien's jealousy of Jean's talent. It makes Julien more curious to know more about Jean and where he comes from.

this is when Julien first gains some respect for Jean, he realizes that Jean is different and that he has talents and abilities and this is when their relationship really starts to change.
