Assia Djebar - One step further

In her work "Il n'y a pas d'exil", Assia Djebar created an Algeria universe based on her own experience. Watch the video clip, then answer the following question:

In your opinion, how is the Algerian War an unresolved issue?

Like many nations that emerge from the grips of colonial rule, Algeria obviously went through a long period of deciding who should fill the power void left by the colonisers. For those unaware, this is the main reason for so many of the civil and internal conflicts in Africa. It is hard to say when these conflicts will be completely resolved because most of the issues that begin the wars remain in place long after the initial conflict is over. Obviously, Algeria is not in the throes of civil war at the moment as the military and the islamist groups have laid down arms. The question remains though of "what would it take to plunge the nation back into civil war?"
The homogeneity that most western nations enjoy is not present in most parts of Africa and in Algeria. There isn't a common creed like in America, neither is there a common language or a common heritage. I think that unless Bebers, Arabs, Islamists and even the military recognize a common identity between them as Algerians, the conflict will keep simmering just below the surface. In fact, in 2006, the nation saw a resurgence of rebel acitivity and last year, there was armed conflict between armed groups and the military ahead of elections in May.

I agree with Afua. I feel like many people were totally devasted by the war in Algeria. Many people still hold a grudge like the lady Dr. Gray was talking about. The lady he stayed with was so angry after so many years. There needs to be some kind of commonality among all or there will be constant unrest and war.

I also agree with what Afua and Michelle said, I believe that there will always be conflict between the Algerians and their French colonizers. An example of this is the French super star soccer Player Zinedine Zidane, he's family is originally from Algeria and a lot of the European society looked down on him because he is originally from Algerian descent. It's been a several years now sense colonization but the mental conflict hasn’t changed much.

As long as sin lives on this earth and in the hearts of citizens of planet earth conflict will still be around. Even though much peace is needed in Algeria and France it may only happen if a miracle occurs. From learning in class that the French discriminate trememndolously against the Algerian and despise them it is saddening that we still do not have the peace and equality people in the past have made a stand for.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Countries have the bad habit of holding grudges long after the individuals that created those grudges have died. That is what has happened between Algeria and France. Even though, the original conflict occurred a long time ago, the grudge is still there. Grudges between countries don't seem to go away due to the lasting impact they have on the society.

i also agree with the comments people have made. the conflict b/t algeria and the french colonisers is never ending. people do hold grudges and don't let things go. even though the conflict happened so long ago, people are still hurt. i'm not sure if the probelm will ever be resolved.

I also agree completely with what the others have previously said. I think that the struggle in Algeria is unresolved beause it is still affecting the people to this day. It obviously had a serious affect on the nation, and this struggle has seriously impacted the people, and it shows in their attitudes toward the French.

Xavier brought up a great point. I had no idea about the French attitude toward Zidane. It shows just how deeply this conflict has affected the people.

I agree with everyone as well. We as humans tend to hold grudges for a long time and it is no different between Algeria and France. Time will only tell if these two countries will one day eventually be able to resolve their differences for good.

I also agree with everyone. This war will not be resolved until these people get rid of there resentment. The anger these people continue to hold will make the end to this war impossible.

So I'm a little late on this one but I also agree with everyone. I feel that with the ideas of nationalism and getting caught up in being patriotic some people hold grudges for things that they were never involved with. These people are the ones who draw out the conflicts and make the whole nation suffer for it

I think in time Algeria and other African countries will find the peace they deserve. Like Afua said most Western countries have proud and faithful citizens who still believe in power and honesty of their governments and who still challenge their government through checks and balances and with freedom of speech. Their problems are so completely different the problems of many other countries like Algeria will continue to have problems because of corruption and the stifling of freedom and the power-hungry murderous, radical leaders.

i agree with what all of my great genius classmates. this is a very interesting account of the conflict between these two countries. there is usually conflict within a nation when powers change and im sure it will stay that way until the end of time. like everyone said there is still tension between the two nations and im sure it will stay that way. both nations have sufferred because of it.
