Samuel Beckett - Do you get it?

Beckett's dramatic works are as well known for their creativity as for their unusual nature. Beckett followed Acte sans paroles-I with Acte sans paroles-II. Watch this video clip and explain in your own words what the "play" Acte sans paroles-II is about.

I think that the video of the play "act without words II " shows Beckett's view that human life, though it may vary from culture to culture and social class to social class, is still just a repetitive cycle of nothingness. The two men in the video illustrate this. They were quite different from each other-they acted different, looked different, and had different outlooks on life. But in spite of this, they were trapped together in a world that they did not even know was unusual in any way. As outsiders looking in, we are able to see the narrow, colorless dimensions of their world and we know that they are condemned to that meaningless, repetitive cycle. Different as they were, their lives were still meaningless. This is Beckett's view of what our world is like.

This clip was strange but what I get from it is that there are two ways to live your life. The first man is portrayed as reflective, and approaches everything he does with caution. The second man, however, seems to be running his life by a routine dictated by time. The first man mulls over every detail of his routine and doesn't appear happy as the second man does. Even when there is a routine in place if we don't know why we keep it, then how can we be happy with it. If we just do what society says, when society says it then we will just be trapped into a meaningless routine.

I think that this video clip illustrates just what Beckett's view of life and society is. When i see his play with no words, it makes me focus on the actions and repetitions without distractions. I think that we can get so caught up in nothingness and the routines and habits of life that we aren't distracted anymore. I think that some things that happen in life should be distracting or distrubing. they break us from the norm and make us different. Otherwise like amy said we do become trapped in a routine of nothingness.

I feel like I am about to repeat everything that has already been said :-) But since Beckett is so fond of repititions, I probably shouldn't feel too bad.
Acte Sans Paroles-II just shows the drudgery of everyday life. I mean, think about it; you wake up every morning, go through the same routine, and then head off to do in one day a variation of what you do in another. You can approach it with a light heart or with a heavy heart, as the characters in the play suggest. At the end of the day though, life is still a drag, the pressures are still heavy, and usually there seems to be no end in sight.
It's like that saying (and I hope this is appropriate) "Life sucks(some people put it another way:-P)and then you die"

I think that the play "Act Without Words II" represents the different ways to live life. Either we can go through it sadly and reflectivly, like the first man or we can go through it happily and timely, as the second man. It shows the two extremes. Both men do live in monotony, and yet, both never seem to acomplish anything.

I thought the clip was really rather weird. It portrays two completely different aspects of this thing we call "life." The first man is extremely cautious, and thinks before he makes any action. The second just acts without hesitation, and seems to be living a happier life. Everything seemed to change between the two man, even the background music. I think this is Beckett's way of showing that no matter how differently we may participate in it, every person's life has the same eventual outcome.

That was a really weird video, but I think I can see what Beckett is trying to say. Even though both men are very different in the way they dress and act, they are both in the same world and have to deal with the fact that their lives are routine and will one day end.

The video was very odd but still effective in demonstrating how people can go through life dreading very morning or greeting morning with a smile. Life is easier when you go through it happy even though life always ends the same way no matter how you lived it.

I saw this clip in two ways. As the men seemed to be wealthy and one poor we watched the lives of these individuals play out. The poor man seemed down about his lifestyle. The wealthier one was put together in his lifestyle, organized and everything. It seemed also that this clip described human nature.

I think it represents how, even though 2 people are at opposite ends of the spectrum, they still shared a common thread. That particular common thread is shared by everyone on this earth. Regardless of how you live your life or what kind of life you were born into or have built for yourself, you will still end up dying. It is inevitable for everyone regardless of the kind of life they led.

that was unbelievably weird, but it shows the drag of everyday life and how the two men are different. it took me a while to figure things out, but that was one of the wierdest things i have ever seen.

I was confused at first by the clip. I think that the two men being so different still conformed to the way they thought they should act. They both did similar things in similar ways. People do that in the world we live in. People act accordingly to how they think they should act based on how other people act. This is what I feel like the two men were doing in the clip.

The clip shows the inevitablity and repetition of life. Even though the two mean are very different in their outlook, both are stuck in a monotonous cycle and their lives are meaningless. It's a very depressing thought, that life is meaningless. We can deal with life happily or sadly, but it will still eventually end.

This clip shows that everyone lives there live in repetition. The same way but different approaches. The world is the same for each, yet they approach it in different ways.

I think that his play "Act without words II" shows us without words how we live our lives. The first man was reflective, maybe a little depressed maybe happy with what he has done with his life and the second is attention seeking. The first man does what he has to without anything extra but the second adds a little extra with taking care of himself!!! To me it asks the question can self-sacrifice and self-care both be a form of love? Is taking care of ones self and taking care of others both in the bible?
